Jailhouse Accommodations - Christchurch, New Zealand

This was Ainsley’s find in the Rough Guide for New Zealand (we finally left the Lonely Planet guidebooks behind after tiring of some errors and basically wanting a new approach). She read it and immediately knew that she wanted to stay there. A quick email exchange later and we were booked for our cell for the first two nights in New Zealand. We don’t have any pictures of the room, which was large and non-descript, but the one feature that we all loved wouldn’t show up anyway. The beds were athlete beds from the recent Melbourne Goodwill Games and the most comfortable ones since George Goldberg’s amazing guest bed in Los Angeles. A good night sleep felt great after long travel days from India to Bangkok and then to Christchurch. It also had a really great movie viewing room with comfortable chairs and a projection TV. We enjoyed a relaxing afternoon one day watching School of Rock, now a favorite of the kids. The kitchen also allowed us some mean grilled cheese sandwiches with ‘Tasty Cheddar’ cheese, somewhat infamous cheese from New Zealand.
You’ll see some mug shots below and one of the central part of the prison.
